I was already running late. I scrambled to get the three youngest kids pulled together with shoes on and hair quickly finger combed. I rushed to make a bottle for Claire, grabbed my keys and grocery list and opened the front door.
Yard maintenance was working that morning. I'd heard them and had even told Tessa to look out the window and watch them to give her something to do while I put on my make-up. When we walked out the front door one of the guys was standing by the van just waiting. "Ma'am, is this your car?" I hesitantly told him yes and then I saw it as I peered through the front of my car. The back window of my van was completely shattered.
Holding Claire, with Dom and Tess following behind, I walked to the back of the van to inspect the damage. He told me that one of his guys was trimming the grass that I had parked next to and a rock flew up and hit the back window.
I herded my kids back in the house as we obviously weren't going to be going to preschool or the grocery store that day. By the time I came back out the nice maintenance guys had already started to vacuum up the glass. I stayed calm. No reason to get upset as it was an accident after all. My biggest worry was that I was going to have to find a way to have to take 3 little kids with me and sit in a waiting room for hours as it got fixed. But no! The yard company and apartment company were on top of things. Within an hour I got a call from the auto glass company saying they'd be out to pick up my van about noon to get the window fixed. Sweet! I had my van back in one piece by 2:30pm and I didn't have to do or pay thing.
The only thing that would have made this little situation better is that the front window would have been hit. It's the one with the break all the way across from a stupid rock chip that didn't get fixed in time. I think I'll park the car in the other direction next time and hope that another stray rock makes it's way to my window so I don't have to fork out the money for that repair!
* I was at the park later and the 'yard guy' who was at the scene of the window shattering thanked me for not getting mad. He told me that most anyone else would have been mad. I told him it was no problem. I remember the apartment managing days so well and how testy tenants can get when unforeseen things happen. Testy tenant are no good.*

I have to agree I think being an apartment manager changes my interactions with people as well! It sounded like you handled it very well! good job!

As I was reading this I was thinking, "oh man, how nice would that be if it happened to me and they hit my front window" Ours is bad due to a cold winter and banging the ice off the wind sheild!! arrghhh.
Glad it all worked out...No point in getting mad most the time, its just time wasted when you can't control what happens right??
I can't see you getting mad anyway... ;)
So glad it didn't turn into some big fiasco . . .unfortunately I say that from the other side of the fence. They put a hole through our counter putting our kitchen back together and now the company doesn't want to take responsibility to fix it!! We have a hole directly behind our kitchen faucet, all the way through the counter. I have tried to not get mad, hopefully it pans out in the end!
I appreciate people like you who realize that people make mistakes. It makes the world more pleasant to live in! And cool van, by the way!
well thanks for the congrats. I know what you mean about the heart racing. Mine has been for the whole pregnancy. I asked my doc about it. I told him I feel like I'm running a marathon all the time. He said, "You are." :D ya, making tons of blood and keeping their heartrates strong. You're so good at posting. I need to check more cuz you always have a new one. I'm trying to be better, but haven't taken many pictures the last month, sadly. Your kids are so big and so cute! and after this pregnancy we'll have four too! that is insane. take care!
